Emma Beckman, a thirty-year-old widow, was almost destitute. She desperately needed a job but her life was such a shambles she had trouble finding anything she could do. She decided to answer an ad for a 5-month-a-year job at Shadow Lake Campground. She didn’t expect to be hired, but she was desperate and had to try. Her last job was a disaster. When she refused to submit to a fellow employee, he jeopardized her job. Her dilapidated vehicle was not up to making the trip to and from the campground.

Shane Lucy married at eighteen, seventeen years earlier, and was the father of a sixteen year old trouble boy, Mick. It started when his mother, Shane’s wife Blair, left them the year before and never contacted them again. When Emma walked into the camp store, Shane’s temper scared her to death. She was so fragile, she was sure she couldn’t work for him. He watched her walk and leave out after he was so rude.

This book has an author who is new to me—M. Jean Pike. I loved her writing style and the ability she has to keep this reader mesmerized. The fact that Emma was fragile and emotionally struggled did not make her a weak character. Likewise, the rough and gruff Shane was vulnerable in his own right. The supporting cast members were dynamic, vibrant people who greatly added to the enjoyment of the storyline. Even the unpopular ex-wife had a pivotal role.

This great work has such an interesting story that I believe everyone would enjoy it. I highly recommend it to anyone. It is a beautiful love story without blatant sexual activity. I highly offer this to you as one book even younger people would enjoy. It is a great book which who’s storyline will remain even after the great ending.

They weren’t looking for love.
So love found them.

Sexy campground owner Shane Lucy needs summer help. Divorced and raising a teenage son alone, the idea of finding love is the last thing on his mind. Yet there’s something sincere and kind about lovely Emma, something genuine unlike anything he’s encountered before.

Emma Beckman is trying to pick up the threads of her unraveled life. Recently widowed, she ventures into Shadow Lake for the prospect of tranquility and a new summer job. Her new boss is a prospect all his own—a magical, beautiful prospect … of love on the lake.

Widowed, “broke”, with no apparent marketable skills, and only a few miserable job experiences, Emma Beckmam struggles with life while her self-esteems plummets. Finding her niche in life proves difficult even though she is a willing worker with a “heart of gold” and “will of iron”.

Shane Lucy, divorced and bitter, owns the campground where Emma seeks work. Their association with each other gets off to a rocky start, jarring both of them into a new awareness about themselves and their individual situations. Long hours of hard work have not helped Shane come to terms with his ex-wife’s rejection nor has it made him a better father to his teenage son.

Even though the plot of Shadow Lake is predictable, Ms. Pike touches on some relevant issues of modern society such as the sub-culture of teenagers, the often fragile psyche of teenagers along with guilt issues a widowed spouse has especially if the death is a suicide.

Some of the secondary characters add much to the story. Mick’s growing pains touch the heart while Dusty’s battle with despair and loneliness makes one long to help him in his fight. The self-absorbed Blair is so clearly drawn by Ms. Pike as is Skye Blue who brings a humor to the happenings that makes one smile.

Shadow Lake, a story about letting go of the past and moving on with life, leaves the reader with a keen awareness of how one person’s actions can influence another’s life—either positively or negatively. Of course, the good feeling that comes when love wins against tremendous odds slips in and makes a rainy day turn bright and shiny.

Finding time to read is a priority for me—after the hubby, the kids, the house, errands, work…etc. I’m sure every woman out there is in the same fix. Finding time to do anything just for us is nearly impossible and for all us avid readers with a huge TBR (to be read) pile, it can be a little frustrating. Once I start a really great book, it’s hard for me to put it down and then come back to it later. I want to read it straight through, but that’s not always possible, especially with the longer stories. That’s why finding those shorter, little gems is always a thrill. M.Jean Pike’s Shadow Lake is a true gem. It’s the perfect length for unwinding with at the end of a long day or relaxing with on the weekend. Best of all, although a stand-alone story, it’s the first in a series.

In the year since her husband’s death, Emma Beckman has tried hard to regain some control over her life. After paying the hospital bills and other debts, she’s broke and living in a horrible apartment in an even worse neighborhood. Several failed job attempts have only added to her frustration and feeling of insecurity. Determined to give it one more try before being forced to seek help from her controlling mother, Emma drives out to Shadow Lake to apply for a position in the camp store.

A disastrous interview with the owner, sexy Shane Lucy, sends an angry Emma scurrying. Although hesitant when Shane offers a second chance and a new beginning, Emma knows she has little choice. Settling into her new job and making friends with Shane’s teenaged son, Mick, Emma is filled with hope that she can finally put her painful past behind her and move on.

When his ex-wife walked out on him and Mick years before, Shane built a protective wall around his heart and he intends to keep it intact. But then he hadn’t counted on meeting someone like Emma. He tries to fight his desire for her beauty, but her vulnerability and caring personality cracks his protective shell as nothing else could. Unfortunately Emma’s heart is still bruised and although terribly attracted to Shane, she isn’t ready for another relationship.

Romance lovers of all genres will adore Shadow Lake. It’s a true romance, but delves into the deeper issues of family, divorce, betrayal, loss, and suicide. M. Jean Pike’s writing has a magical way of drawing the reader in and holding them there until the final page is turned. The skillful plotting, lush descriptions, and charming cast of characters are enchanting. When turning that last page, readers will be left with wonderful sense of satisfaction and will eagerly look forward to the next in the series.
